American football, known in the United States simply as football, is a competitive team sport known for mixing strategy with intense physical play. The object of the game is to score points by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone.

Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each. The goal of baseball is to score runs by hitting a thrown ball with a bat and touching a series of four markers called bases arranged at the corners of a ninety-foot square, or diamond.

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five active players each try to score points against one another by propelling a ball through a 10 feet (3 m) high hoop under organized rules. Basketball is one of the most popular and widely viewed sports in the world.

Golf is a sport in which a player, using several types of clubs, hits a ball into each hole on a golf course in the lowest possible number of strokes. Golf is defined in the Rules of Golf as "playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules."

Soccer (or football), is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players, and is widely considered to be the most popular sport in the world.

Tennis is a game played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players (doubles). Each player uses a strung racquet to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt (most of the time yellow, but can be any color or even two-tone) over a net into the opponent's court.

Ice hockey is played on a large flat area of ice, using a three inch (76.2 mm) diameter vulcanized rubber disc called a puck. This puck is often frozen before high-level games to decrease the amount of bouncing and friction on the ice. It is the most popular sport in Canada and in Finland.

The goal of competitive swimming is to be the fastest to swim at a given distance and drop time. Competitive swimming became popular in the nineteenth century, and comprises 34 individual events - 17 male events and 17 female events.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport in which a wide variety of fighting techniques are used, including both striking and grappling. Modern mixed martial arts tournaments as a popular phenomenon emerged in 1993 with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Shortly after the introduction of bicycles, competitions developed independently in many parts of the world. Early races involving boneshaker style bicycles were predictably fraught with injuries. The most famous of all bicycle races is the Tour de France. This began in 1903, and continues to capture the attention of the sporting world.

Boxing (sometimes known as pugilism, Anglais boxing, or English boxing) is a combat sport in which two participants of similar weight fight each other with their fists. Boxing today is conducted in a regulated way, typically in a series of one to three-minute intervals called rounds.

All forms of rugby include the prolate spheroid rugby ball and the ban on passing the ball forward, so that players can gain ground only by running with the ball or by kicking it. Scoring in rugby occurs by achieving either a try or a goal.

Sport fishing competitions involve individuals if the fishing occurs from land, and usually teams if conducted from boats, as well as a specified time and area from which to catch fish. A score is awarded for each fish caught.
